Engineering Week 2015

The last week of February is typically reserved for “Engineering Week” where when observed, celebrates and highlights different aspects of engineering. We visited Cale Elementary School  in Charlottesville, VA to demonstrate different kinds of engineering to 3rd graders. Following a short introductory presentation to the kids about what the “engineer of the day” did for a living and how it relates to their lives, we did an activity with them to show that they can be engineers too (and not even get a degree in it!). Below are some pictures from each day (Day 4 is missing due to snow :/)!

Day 1: Chemical Engineering

We looked at how objects less dense than water (aluminum foil) floats and liquid soap (a surfactant) affects the surface tension of water causing this object to sink.

Day 2: Electrical Engineering

Using SnapCircuits and Electoninks Circuit Scribe, we looked at how current flows and creates electricity. They were so surprised that electricity runs through them!

Day 3: Mechanical Engineering

Using household items (plastic bag & blow dryer) we made our own hot air balloons. They even tested how long it would stay in the air!

Day 5: Civil Engineering

These future Civil Engineers worked to create the tallest free-standing structure. The tallest turned out to be 70in!
